Результаты эпидемиологических исследований, проведенных в последние 10–20 лет, свидетельствуют о значительном росте числа больных, страдающих хроническими болями, включая головные и висцеральные боли, боли в суставах и спине и другими болевыми синдромами скелетно-мышечного и нейрогенного происхождения. По некоторым оценкам каждый седьмой пациент, обращающийся в поликлинику, предъявляет жалобы на боли в суставах, мышцах или костях.Тизанидин нашел широкое применение для лечения синдромов, сопровождающихся болезненным мышечным спазмом. При локальных болевых синдромах он эффективен как в виде монотерапии, так и комбинации с НПВС. Эффективность монотерапии тизанидином при этих состояниях и прежде всего боли в спине и шее доказаны в адекватных клинических исследованиях и их метаанализе.
