Актуальность изучения депрессии в пожилом возрасте обусловлена многими причинами. В последние десятилетия увеличивается встречаемость депрессии в старших возрастных группах. По данным ряда авторов, представленность депрессии у людей старше 65 лет колеблется от 7 до 36%. При этом у пожилых пациентов, находящихся в стационаре, этот процент возрастает до 40% (А.М.Вейн и соавт., 2007). Наибольший процент нераспознанных и нелеченых депрессий приходится именно на депрессии у пациентов пожилого возраста. Также следует отметить, что депрессия наряду с деменцией считается основной причиной значительного снижения качества жизни в пожилом возрасте. Как правило, она протекает на фоне органических неврологических и соматических заболеваний. Такое сочетание порождает многочисленные проблемы – от сложностей выявления депрессии до понимания ее патогенеза, причинно-следственных отношений с органическими заболеваниями и определения подходов к терапии.
