Структурная формула и свойства АЛК были определены в 1951 г., тогда же начаты клинические исследования эффективности этого вещества при различных заболеваниях. Мощное антиоксидантное действие определило возможности терапевтического использования АЛК [50]. Прежде всего, восстановленная форма АЛК продемонстрировала свойства «ловушки» основного свободного радикала – супероксида. В связи с этим субстанция нашла широкое применение для лечения отравлений металлами и грибами, неалкогольного и алкогольного стеатогепатита, алкогольной полинейропатии.
