Предшественниками фторхинолонов были синтетические нефторированные хинолоны, первый представитель которых (налидиксовая кислота) появился в 1962 г. Этот препарат, как и последующие (пипемидимиевая кислота, оксолиниевая кислота, циноксацин и др.), вследствие достаточно узкого антимикробного спектра и плохих фармакокинетических свойств нашли ограниченное применение в клинике, преимущественно при лечении инфекций мочевыводящих путей и некоторых кишечных инфекций. Только после модификации молекулы хинолина (или нафтиридина) путем введения в нее атома фтора появились антимикробные препараты с уникальными свойствами, которые получили обобщенное название «Фторхинолоны». В настоящее время группа фторхинолонов по количеству современных антимикробных лекарственных средств уступает только b-лактамным антибиотикам. Большая номенклатура препаратов группы фторхинолонов свидетельствует об их значении для лечения бактериальных инфекций.
