Многочисленными исследованиями было убедительно доказано, что даже небольшое, порой эпизодическое, повышение АД увеличивает риск развития инфаркта, инсульта в несколько раз. АГ является фактором риска№1 в структуре общей смертности в мире, превышая значения таких значимых факторов, как высокий индекс массы тела, злоупотребление алкоголем, последствия незащищенного секса, вместе взятых.Результаты одного из основополагающих для современной гипертензиологии метаанализов показали, что снижение систолического АД (САД) на 2 мм рт. ст. приводит к снижению смертности от ишемической болезни сердца (ИБС) и от инсульта соответственно на 7 и 10%.
