Постоянное мониторирование уровня глюкозы крови стало возможным с появлением доступных средств самоконтроля: сначала тест-полосок, а затем портативных глюкометров. С появлением глюкометров началась новая эра в управлении СД - осознанное участие больных в лечении. Глюкометры позволяют определять содержание глюкозы крови во внебольничных условиях.
